Shaping the Pacific Northwest
with Geographic Information Systems (S/GIS)
A Summer Institute for Pre-college Teachers
This geosciences program uses key disciplines (meteorology, climatology, geomorphology, oceanography, volcanology, hydrology, petrology, natural hazards, erosion and sedimentation) as a base for introducing classroom teachers to Geographic Information Systems. This content is presented by recognized experts in each field and then used by participants to apply the data into GIS representations of the region. Individual projects are then created to interpret inter-relationships of disciplines using GIS in unique ways.
Participant Objectives:
Teams of two teachers from a school are encouraged to apply to take advantage of a continuing exchange of ideas while using the material with students. Individuals may also apply.
S/GIS will meet weekdays, July 9-13, 16-20 & 23-27, 2001 at Portland State University from 9:00 – 12:00 & 1:00 – 4:00 (during two days of fieldtrips hours will be somewhat extended). There will be two follow-up meetings (two hours each) in Fall 2001.
Participants will receive instruction, ArcView GIS software (Windows 95, 98 or NT), resource materials, and graduate college credit (CI 810) and/or stipend. Credit is awarded at the rate of 10 hours of instructional time / credit. The class will be considered as 90 hours long for up to 9 credits. Participants will be required to produce project documents in the form of lesson plans, book reviews, etc. for each credit received. Individuals may register for 0, 3, 6 or 9 credits. Those participants choosing a stipend will receive $60 / day (maximum $900) for days not used towards university credit. A combination of credit and stipend may be selected (i.e. 6 credits and $300). Attending all three weeks of the program is required.
This offering is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation Directorate of Geosciences.
